Encouragement Cards

This weekend, I am attending our annual STARS retreat in Kerrville with 40 women who we have been preparing and praying for the last 10 weeks. I made these cards as my love letters for each of them. Totally different than any card I had made before but I am mostly pleased with them. I knew I wanted to use an old hymnal that Mike had found in the attic but when it came down to chopping it up, I got kind of sentimental and decided to scan a hymn and make copies. I distressed the copies (first time) with Tim Holtz' distress ink then stamped a flower on top, added a little bling and finished by adding Mathew 11:28 to the inside.

Horace and Darlene celebrated 15 years of marriage today. I used my new Stampin Up owl punch and made this little card for them. (H-Man has his eye on Darlene! Isn't it cute?)

I made these ornaments for each of the girls on our Florida getaway. I cut the letters out with vinyl and cut some scrapbook paper circles and put them in the bulb. Easy schmeasy!

My Productive Day

Some ladies get together up at church once a month and scrapbook. I decided to join them today and invited the lovely, Cheryl Gembler to join me. It was a relaxing and fun day. (I always have fun with my rock star friend!) My card stash is quite low and I have tons of paper so I decided to make cards using scraps and left over supplies. These are some of my better creations from today.

A Bumble Bee For A Baby Boy

A sweet friend is having her first baby any day now and I have been meaning to deliver this night light for William's room for sometime. I thought if I posted a picture of it, she will probably see it and then I can't drag my feet any more! It is stinkin heavy! His room is bumble bees and light green. I thought this would be a nice addition. I put the light in the top so she can use it as a bank later if they like. It is big - 9"x 9" (did I mention heavy?) and I backed it with a pretty green paper - the photo doesn't show that very well. I hope L-J likes it!

I have finally started working on goodies to take to Florida next month. Those are top secret...I will post those pictures after the big trip. I'm getting excited!

Getting Back to My Roots

I have been trying to get back in touch with my creative side lately. I have been doing some crafting (but need to do MUCH more) and a little bit of baking. Hubby's birthday was last week so I made one of his favorite desserts. Cream Puffs! Very easy and I was quite impressed with the outcome! I have been asked to make them again, and I will. I have made a note to bake a little longer next time - until a little more brown.
I have included the recipe from www.lafujimama.com in case you would like to give it a try.

Fuji Cream Puffs

Makes 10 large cream puffs (or 20 medium, or 4 dozen mini cream puffs)

1 cup water
1/2 cup butter (4 ounces)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

3. Bring the water to a boil in a medium-size saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the butter. When the butter has melted, add the flour mixture all at once and stir vigorously. Cook and stir until the mixture forms a ball that doesn’t separate.

4. Remove from the heat and cool slightly (about 1 minute). Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each one until the dough is smooth.

5. Drop heaping tablespoons of dough about 2-inches apart onto a greased baking sheet. Or transfer the batter to a pastry bag with a round tip and pipe circles about 2-inches in diameter and about 1-inch apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake the puffs for about 30 minutes until they are golden brown and puffy. If the puffs are medium-size, bake for about 22 — 25 minutes, and if the puffs are mini-size, bake for about 17 — 20 minutes. Remove the cream puffs from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

Almond Cream Filling
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup milk
I teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix together vanilla instant pudding mix, cream and milk and extract. Cover and refrigerate to set.

Diaper Wreath

I made this wreath from disposable diapers for one of my favorite people at work. Joy & Brad Hamann welcomed Jax Kinnick Hamann to the world on Thursday, November 18th. He is a big guy, 9 lbs 2 ozs and 22" long. I cant wait to hold the little guy! I saw one of these while looking for ideas for hospital door banners online. It was super easy and fun to make. If you want to make one and need some tips, give me a holler!

Do You Remember Me?

Hi Friends,

It has been 88 days since my last post and almost that long since I have even looked at a blog. I considered deleting my blog for a short while but yesterday, I was scrolling through my previous posts and realized I want to start crafting again and blogging about it as well as the happenings in my world. So as soon as I finish this post, I am heading upstairs to see if I have any creative juice left in my tired old body.

I will try and quickly catch up where I left off on July 12th, 2010. My lovable, sweet little brother, Jody finally went home to be with Jesus on August 22 at 11:29 pm. As I have said many times before, he was so weak and was losing the fight to live that he was so admired for his whole life. We were not with him when he took his last breath but our heavenly Father was there to guide Jody to his new home. The hospital staff tried to revive Jody but thankfully, he went quickly and he wasn't coming back to his life of illness, loneliness and pain. He is now whole and pain free, for that I am very thankful. I am also thankful for God's perfect timing and allowing me almost a full year with Jody after being out of his life for such a long time. I am so grateful that he is finally in heaven but I am (still) much sadder than I thought I would be. I am still working on closure but realize I have a long road ahead of me. I need to get back in my craft cave and start creating again. I know that will help with my depression.

I made it to Disney for the annual Girl's Getaway. I laughed a lot and cherish the time I had with some wonderful Christian friends. And after coming back home Mike and I went to Colorado to enjoy the fall colors and close the house up for the winter. I got some fabulous photos of God's beautiful fall artwork and had some much needed alone time with Mike.

I have had some trouble getting back into the routine of my "healthy" eating and activity plan. I had to go to the doctor because I was having stomach pains and not sleeping well. I was pleased to see I am 28 lbs lighter than my last visit in January. I need to get serious again before I lose too much ground. I am back at Zumba tomorrow and heading up to my craft room right now. I missed all of you and your awesome blogs! I look forward to catching up with what has been happening while I have been away.

50th Anniversary Card

I made this and gave it to my sweet friend, Kristy at work today. She and her husband, Kyle told me this afternon that they are leaving in 2 weeks to start another music ministry at a satellite church in Boerne. I'm kinda bummed. Happy for them, sad for me.

Graduation and Just because Card

I made these while watching the Season Finale of Survivor tonight. I am so glad Russell didn't win!

This is stamped with The Angel Company's Funny Farm set. I used miscellaneous paper and ribbon from my stash. It was originally going to be a birthday card but I think I will use it for some other random occasion.

I cut this with my Cricut Sweet Treats cartridge and made it into a card using Design Studio. It is going to the family of a co-worker that has had a tough couple of weeks. People have volunteered to send meals home with them for the next 2 weeks. Tomorrow, Darlene, Miriam and myself are sending Lasagna, salad andyummy pie. I thought we would include a pretty flower to say "Hi ~ We are praying for you".

This is for my friend Miriam's son, Filipe. He graduated from Concordia University Austin, Summa Cum Laude! He is off to Brazil then Europe this week. I am sure he can use a little extra cash. Have I told you lately that I don't have a knack for guy cards? (I used purple only because it is his school colors)

Baby Shower Gifts

I made the following for baby shower gifts. First is the name plaque that I created from a metal "scroll" sign that I got for $6 on clearance at Hobby Lobby. It had "love" and crosses all over the front and was oriented portrait style. I covered it with paper that coordinates with the nursery colors and added the oval with the baby's name. Two holes drilled in the metal allowed me to thread some ribbon to hang it landscape for a nice gift. I am quite pleased with the outcome.

I also made a BABY mini album and a Grandma's Brag Book (that I forgot to take a photo of). Look at the cute little monkey from create a critter. I just love him!

This is the back of the album and there are 2 "micro mini" albums inside to add additional photos. I hope you like it!

It has been a rough week for me but I am thankful to have "made it" to the weekend. Mike and I just returned from a nice dinner date at Clear Springs and are looking for a movie to watch on PPV. Happy Mother's Day to all of my blog friends out there. Be sure you tell your mother you love her - you never know when it will be your last opportunity.

Gimmer Mist Rocks!

Last week Jane turned me on to Glimmer mist. I know it has been around for awhile but I never had any interest until she put a bottle in my hot little hand. I came home with several bottles and have spritzed everything that doesn't move in my scrap room. One of my favorite colors is Chocolate Covered Cherries. It has a rich reddish brown shimmer and it's just scrumptious. I know I went a bit overboard on this card but I am in L-O-V-E! I have been seeing a lot of projects lately with corrugated cardboard so I took a whirl at using some on this birthday card.

I have been making several gifts lately that I haven't been able to post so I stopped today to play with a new stamp set and paper from my friend Karen at The Angel Company. This little piggy is from The Funny Farm set and is so cute! There are some other cute farm animals in the set that I will show you later.

That's all for now. I had an AWESOME weekend and am looking forward to a great work week. Now, I'm off to watch the Spurs beat the Mavs! GO SPURS GO!

A Fun Weekend With The Girls!

I spent the weekend with the girls from The Scrapbooking Factory at the Hilton Hill Country Hotel & Spa. We had an awesome time! I didn’t go until Saturday morning and it was raining so hard, the drive was very scary. As I was poking down 1604 at 35 MPH, the Bexar County Sherriff’s Dept. went flying by me pulling a boat behind their SUV. High water rescues are an all too common occurrence in these parts. I hear we got somewhere in the neighborhood of 6” of rain on Saturday alone. Once I got settled and hugged and talked to everyone, I was a busy girl! Unfortunately none of my creations can be posted yet because they are for gifts. I am amazed by all of the great things these women whip out at warp speed! I wish I had photographed more of the beautiful creations. We took a break to play LCR or Triple Nipple some call it. Dee-Dee took away all the loot! It was very fun!

Cheryl and I stayed up working until after 1:00 am and then crashed until 7:30. We got a super room rate and it was so much nicer than driving all the way across town on 1604 in the middle of the night and dodging drunks. You can see my messy work space and a few photos from the hotel. I couldn't resist adding a couple of pictures to show what a beautiful day Sunday turned out to be. We are entering the yellow phase of wildflower season and I always think of "following the yellow brick road" when I drive down the highway and they are lined with the Brown Eyed Susans and Butter Cups.

Dry Spell

I have been suffering from a major dry spell and all my creative juices are pretty dried up. It makes me sad - I go sit in my scrapbook room and start to make something but nothing is "working" for me right now. I sure hope I get a creative flow going again soon.

Tonight I made this easel birthday card. Ho hummm.

Last night I saw a tutorial on Splitcoaststampers for an envelope pocket card. Cute idea and easy to do. The butterfly stamp and sentiment is from Close to my Heart. I want to try it again and make some modifications. Wish me luck or better yet give me some ideas on getting out of my funk! I am going to crop with the girls from The Scrapbooking Factory this weekend so hope fully that will help. We will be staying at the Hilton so if I don't get my mojo back, you might find me in the bar!

I am still alive! I work in a church office and the week after Easter is one of my busiest weeks. I survived (yay!) and have been spending the weekend reorganizing my scrap room. Flower Pot Pocket Card

The last time Cheryl came over she brought these super cute flowers that she made with the Sweet Treats cartridge. (aren't they pretty?) They have been sitting on my table for the past few weeks just looking pretty and making me smile. Tonight when I went upstairs they were saying "Use me!" "Make something pretty with me!" so I did just that. I needed a birthday card so I made this easy Flower Pot Pocket card from a video I came across on Splitcoast stampers a while back.It was very easy and I had it put together in about 30 minutes. Having the flowers already made was a time saver and I cut the leaves with the Everyday Paper Dolls cartridge.

The little tag slides right out and I stamped the birthday greeting on it. It was a quickie so I have lots of better ideas for my next one. My camera battery is dead so I had to take the pictures with my phone -_-

Tissue Paper Flower and a Couple of Other Creations

I saw a short tutorial on Practical Stampers on making tissue paper flowers. They are super easy to make. My card leaves a lot to be desired but I learned something new so it wasn't a waste.

Here is my little Wonder and Joy friend from The Angel Company. Doesn't she make you smile? The link takes you to Karen's blog. She can fix you up with all sorts of great stamps!

Today, my son Matthew turned 23. Like I have said before, I am greatly challenged when it comes to making "boy cards". I think this one is screaming for a flower or two. He said he is thankful I controlled the urge and suggested splashing some motor oil on my next guy card. Luckily I don't ask him for design suggestions often.

My Prize and a Few Cards

I am seriously behind on birthday gifts for Mike's sister an her great husband. They are two of my favorite people and they always seem to get put on the "back burner". I feel so bad about that. I have her card and gift ready to go and today I made an "oh so OK" guy card for Bron. I wasn't feeling very creative today and I think this poor fish shows it!

I have no immediate plans for this little cupcake from my new Sweet Treats cartridge. It is such a fun cartridge. I just wish I had more time to play.

This last one is a thank you card for a sweet friend of mine that has done so much for me since the death of my father. The little cutie comes from The Angel Company. Karen is my personal angel (I just love saying that!) and she has sold me a few sets that I wish I had more time to play with. Go see her goodies and tell her I said hi!

Disney Layout

Plans are underway for my 2nd annual trip to Walt Disney World for The Scrapper's Dream Vacation (Cheryl's 4th, Wren & Jackie's 3rd). I smile every time I look at our photos. I did promise myself I would create a layout so here it is and it really has me excited for the big trip! Cheryl came over yesterday and we were going to color with our Copics but after we talked for awhile and laughed a lot, this is all I got done.You should see what she is making! I am really eyeballing it! If she posts it to her blog, I will provide a link. Did I mention she is the rock star of paper?

Riley and Company - Anything But a Card Challenge

With everything going on lately, I have neglected my boyfriend Riley. I just so happened to stop by Riley and Company yesterday and see they are having a new challenge to make anything but a card with a Riley stamp. I got so excited and dug my stamps out. I love coffee almost as much as I love Riley so I made myself a new coffee mug (extra large!). These are 2 of my favorite stamps. The text reads: "With enough caffeine, I could rule the world". I think that might be true. Hold the cupcake though, I am trying to lose weight. Go to Riley's blog and see some of the cleaver creations they came up with.

Another view. I tried to stamp it in some sort of pattern but it just wasn't working. I like it much better with the random thing going on. I think I will be making other Riley inserts for my coffee mug.

I have been making lots of Thank You cards lately. So many have reached out to me and my family during my brother's illness and my father's death. I am one blessed girl! My sister asked me to make a card for her to give to someone special to her. The front reads "you are one in a buzzillion". It is a Stampin Up hand me down from my buddy Susan.Thanks girlfriend. Like I said, I am blessed!

My Quest To Be Healthy

Today I took a big step. I joined Weight Watchers! Well, writing about it is an even bigger step but I can't keep it a secret....you know that accountibility thing. As surprised as you may be, I'm not getting any younger and the weight is piling on. I won't lie and say "I have no idea why I am fat!" I know exactly why I am over weight. From eating yummy gooey foods that go down easy and sitting on my big butt. I need to take some life changing steps and get moving while I can still move. My health is good but it won't stay that way for long if I don't make some changes.

After doing some research, Weight Watchers seems to be the best every day eating plan and one that would teach me the most about making some lifetime changes. I am doing the online program so I won't be attending meetings. As far as the exercise is concerned, I love to walk so I will be working it into my day and go from there. Wish me luck (although I don't believe in luck). Heck, this is prayer worthy, so say a prayer that I am sucessful in my journey to better health. Here I Go!!!!!!!!!!

I think I am all rested up from my hiatus and spent a few hours up in my room making a mess and creating a few cards. I have several thank you's to send and people are starting to want a home made cards which is okay because I love to make them. I just wish I could teach myself not to make such a major mess when I make cards If you know the secret feel free to share.

This first card is my little friend from The Angel Company. The stamp set is called Wonder and Joy and she really makes me smile so I agree with the name. I colored her with Copics

This card is made with my Cuttlebug Thanks folder. Couldn't be much easier but still quite cute, I think.

This is a gate fold card. One of my favs to make. I just stamped "Thank You "on the inside and used some oh so pretty My Minds Eye scraps.

Oh lookie lookie! My first easel card! Another stamp from the "Wonder and Joy" set (did I mention I love her?) and My Minds Eye scraps. This one I like! Now don't faint when I tell you this but I think I am going to do a layout this week - after I clean my room of course.........

Back to work tomorrow! I am ready to get back to a normal schedule.

I have decided I am going to start ending each post with a few daily blessings. There is something to be thankful for every day so why keep it a secret?

OK, maybe not the Academy but I couldn't resist the dumb joke! I just crack myself up sometimes! My sweet blog friend Wanda, sent me this award just when I needed a little pick me up. (She is pretty good at that!) Life has been a bit overwhelming lately with the passing of my father and waiting and attending his memorial service. It was yesterday and I will say it went very well. A few comical moments include a speaker phone that was more of a distraction than anything. No music for one hymn and music that couldn't be sung to for another. A man who introduced himself to me and said, "How did you know Bob (my dad) ?" My biggest smile comes from the fact that I rejoice that my father is now in heaven. The message was a fitting one. It focused on God's grace and how everyone of us is undeserving yet we all get an equal helping of it. Nothing to split up and quarrel over, it is a free gift for all of us. He also spoke of 3 "F" words to remember (good ones)! Faith- Is it possible to release all our fears and failures to God? Yes it is. Give it a try, He will bless you beyond your wildest dreams. I have died, but Christ lives in me. And I now live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me. Galations 2:20
Forgiveness- This is a huge hurdle to conquer but once we do, it is so healing. God continues to forgive us every time we stumble and we should do the same. Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?“No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!" Matthew 18:21-22
Focus- Keep your eye on the prize! Jesus wants us to focus on Him and the multitude of blessings we have. Don't be distracted by the storms in life. Because what we are focused on will consume us. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Hebrews 12:1-2

Wow, Where did that come from? I just intended to write about my award from Wanda. I guess yesterday's message is still rolling around in my head. I loved some of his points so much I wanted to stand up and shout "Amen!" Maybe that's the Baptist coming out in me! (another dumb joke.)

No More Pain No More Sorrow

My father, Robert Sherdel Orrison Sr., passed peacefully to his heavenly home at 9:05 pm February 17, 2010 at the age of 77 years and 6 months. He battled lung cancer for almost 2 years. 4 of his 5 children and several grandchildren were with him in his last hours. His immediate survivors are, children Robert (Linda)Orrison Jr , Debbie Bodin, Becky (Mark) Plata, Robyn (Mike) Neel, and Jody Orrison. Grandchildren, Robert III, Tina, Brian, Travis, Eric, Nicole, Matthew and Hayley.

My father has won his battle through Jesus Christ. For that I am thankful.

My First Challenge

I love to stalk all the great blogs out there and everyone seems to be having challenges. I found Practical Scrapers through my sweet internet friend Wanda. They are big into using what supplies you have on hand and I am making a serious effort to do that this year. Their challenge this week is to make something with flowers. The only thing I think I love more than paper is flowers! The BIG problem I have is that I am afraid to use them. I know there are no rules in this papercrafting world but I am still learning ...This card has 18 flowers on it which is a stretch for me. Who knows, maybe I'll get wild and use 20 on my next project..Lord knows I have enough!

Anyhow, I used My Mind's Eye paper (gorgeous!), some Prima flowers and lots of miscellaneous flowers. It was a fun one to make!

Cards for my Valentines

I got the new Love Struck cartridge for a steal just in time for Valentine's Day. I have wanted to play with it all week but I never got a chance until tonight. The Cuttlebug Diamond Plate embossing folder was about as manly of a Valentine's theme I could come up with. I embossed some metalic paper and I think it looks pretty metal like. Don't you? The frilly pink and black card is for Hayley. All 3 of the hearts were cut with Love Struck. I need to tidy up my room - I have an idea in my head. I need to hurry before I lose it!

Birthdays Are Good For You

There is an old saying: "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery." I always feel like I am being bad when I copy someone elses design. People say it's perfectly ok as long as you give credit where it is deserved so let me say this is a total scraplift job that I made while waiting for an email tonight - but I won't mention any names ok Cheryl? :o) I probably should have taken a little more time with it but I am having so much fun playing with my new Sweet Treats cartridge. I saw it on a new blog I started following called Live Love and SCRAP! She makes some beautiful cards. I will probably be copying her stuff a lot cuz it's all so stinkin cute!

Karen sent me this cute set along with my order. The name escapses me but it is a hostess gift with The Angel Company. I would host a demonstration for you if I could Karen! Do you travel out of state? haha! I used scrap paper (still going strong on using my surplus). And the sentiment comes from my friend Julie Keller's Close To my Heart. The inside says "Always Makes Me Smile". Kinda cute I think.

This little girl captured my heart the first time I saw her. She arrived in the mail today - thanks Karen! Go see her blog and leave her a comment. She makes some seriously cute cards.

I have been coloring all night... Isn't she cute? Inside reads: "is simply delightful!" I plan on sending it to one of my awesome volunteers at church.

I am snuggled up on the couch right now watching "Bruce Almighty". I plan on a day filled with more fun tomorrow because I got a ton of cute stuff - all from The Angel Company.

Cookie Exchange Recipe Books

I hosted a Cookie Exchange in December and we had a great time. Everyone brought a copy of their recipe. I finally made a cookbook for everyone that came. I used my favorite mini album item, paper bags. All of the paper is from my stash so they are all different. I didn't want to embellish them too much since they will be used in the kitchen. I hope to make the Cookie Exchange an annual event. There are several pockets to add more recipes to next year and the year after! Now to get them all delivered!

I'll have to fix that before I deliver them.

Fairy Tale Fun

A week or two back, I won an adorable stamp set on Karen's blog Scrap & Stamp Angel. She is a consultant for The Angel Company. I don't know how I found her but I am now a big fan of TAC. I will be placing an order with her very soon. The set I won is called Fairy Tale Fun. It has several cute fairies and stars along with this sweet little frog. I thought he would make a cute Valentine. I tell my daughter you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. This guy is ready to pucker up!

I am still doing well using my paper before shopping. It's kind of fun shopping in my own scrapbook room! The one below is another scrap card.

Moving Day Card

I made this Moving Day card for someone special that God entrusted Mike and I to raise for the last 18 years, 4 months and one day (who's counting?). I am one heart broken mama as I finally quit begging and even bribing our youngest child to stay "just a while longer". She is so eager to get out there and spread her wings and start a life for herself. "Hard-headed", "determined" or "stubborn" may have been used to describe my wonderful Hayley once or twice but I trust that she will be fine. Recently however, I am the one I've had concerns about. I am really hurting! I am working very hard at turning my beautiful child over to God and trusting His plan for her life. I truly believe God has great things in store for my Hayley. I know the more productive thing for me to do is to pray for her safety and that this step into indepedence strengthens her relationsip with Jesus.

I put a little care package together for her and made the card to go inside. Pebbles had to sit on my lap while I made it. Dog fuzz and tears just made it that much better!

Scrap Card

I made a promise to myself that I am going to make a serious effort not to buy any retail items before "shopping" in my scrapbook room. I have been a good girl and the only purchase I have made is one Riley Moose Valentine stamp and I can't wait till he gets here! Anyway, back to my commitment ....It isn't going too swift so far but I won't get discouraged. I need to clean and organize this week so I can get a visual inventory and I think it will be better after that. I am going to crop this weekend and I have 9 cookie recipe books to make from our Christmas Cookie Exchange and they will be made entirely from items I already have. This will be a challege! The card above is made from scraps and it is ehhh, OK. It looks like a valentine but I will use it tomorrow for an anniversary card for my awesome husband Mike. 1-11-10 is our 24th anniversary. I could scribble "I love you" on a piece of scratch paper and he would save it forever so he will certainly be pleased with this. I am a blessed girl!

I am feeling a little down tonight so I forced myself to sit in my craft room until I made something. The biggest thing I made was a mess but I managed to make a few cards and a make & take kit from Jane's that I had been holding on to. This birthday card is the only thing that made the cut for the blog. I like the little bugger. I stamped "You are not getting older...You are getting better" inside. Happy New Year!

I have never been much of a New Year’s resolution person. Maybe it is because I am afraid of failing or fearful of the challenges a resolution might produce (more fear). However, I am a big fan of new beginnings. I love waking up in the morning knowing God gives me another chance to strive to be the woman He has been molding me to be all my life. I took God’s grace for granted for a very long time. 2009 has been a year of many challenges for a lot of people - my family included. We have dealt with conflicts at work and home, we have experienced illness and death, money is not as plentiful as in years past. It has been a tough year but it has been a year of growth as well.

A few thoughts on what I learned in 2009…

FORGIVENESS - Through God’s grace, He has led me to forgive ones that have hurt me. I have also asked for forgiveness for my actions that may have caused them pain. I had no idea forgiveness would be such a healing act. Through forgiveness I have been able to renew my relationship with my sister. (I have hopes for more reunions in time) It is wonderful to have a sister again. "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

TRUST – My sweet brother Jody has had a tough 44 years of life but 2009 has brought him new obstacles. He has been hospitalized for over 3 months in very serious condition. I have spent many days with him wondering what is keeping him alive. Why doesn’t God take him to his heavenly home? Other days, like today, I come home feeling encouraged by what I see. It is difficult for me to watch my pure hearted brother suffer. He is so brave and I am very proud of him. As I watch Jody struggle, I realize God is teaching me to trust His timing. I know it is perfect, even for Jody. “I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Psalm 40:1-2

JOY – "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 2009 had a few challenges. I have hope that 2010 will be a year of good health and blessings for my loved ones. Reality is that there will always be bad days and even some bad years. Unfortunately pain is a part of living in this sinful world. In 2010 I want to be joyful always. God tells me that there will not be a perfect set of circumstances in this life but I can always have joy through Jesus Christ. It is my choice. Without Jesus, I have no joy. 2010 here I come!

I think I just made a New Year’s resolution… Now if I could just resolve to do something about my weight! -_-

Snowman Ornament

I made several of these for gifts this year. I stamped the image on a transparency (cut in a circle) with StazOn ink and colored it. I used my embossing gun to set the ink. I curled it small enough to slide in the glass ball. It is held in place with a piece of thread through the transparency and glued to the edge of the ornament. Last, I sprinkled some synthetic snow inside through a funnel. I think they came out quite cute. If I have enough time I'll make more.

Tri Fold Shutter Card

This is my first attempt to make a tri fold shutter card and it was amazingly easy! It is for a special friend that is turning 60 the day after Christmas. This was a fun one to make! I think she will like it.

Another Glass Block

On this one I covered the entire block with etching cream then I made a stencil with my Cricut and painted the letters with Stickles. I think it came out pretty cute.

I made it for my friend at work, Miriam (or Mimi as we lovingly call her). She is a Brazilian mess! She has a shirt that has this quote on it and it fits her perfectly. I hope she enjoys it.

Etched Glass Block

I couldn't get a good picture of this to save my life. It is my first attempt at using the glass etching cream. I cut "LET IT SNOW" out with the Storybook cartridge and placed them on the clean block. I cut several snowflakes from a couple of other cart and placed them randomly around the phrase. I brushed the etching cream on with a foam brush and left it on for almost 30 minutes although the directions suggest 10. Rinsed it off with cool water and pulled the vinyl off. The photo doesn't show it but I glued (spray adhesive) a pretty piece of of Bo Bunny paper on the back to coordinate with the snowflakes and ribbon color. A 25 count strand of clear lighs looks very pretty inside. It is much prettier in person - I promise.

Snowman Invitation

I made these for my friend Darlene. She is hosting a Christmas dinner at her home and wanted to send out some special invitations. I was drawing a blank on my Christmas cards so I made these instead. I don't think I ever saw an ugly snowman but this guy is way cute! Now back to my Christmas Cards. I hope to have them done by Valentine's Day!

By the way...A quick word of thanks to our loving father in Heaven. My little brother went home today after 8 weeks in the hospital. He is still very weak and the trache is still in place but God has my sweet brother in the palm of his hand. He has something more in store for Jody and I can't wait to see what it is!

What's in a name?

Naming a blog is harder than naming a child! I have no regrets on the names I chose for my children but I can't say the same for my blog....I'm not even sure if I was thinking. After much thought and very little research, I have decided to change my blog's URL. It appears that it can be easily done but Blogger's Blog (sounds funny!) doesn't advise it. They say I will lose any followers I have and all links to my blog will no longer be valid. They say most people regret it. I only have 18 followers so it would be easy enough to notify those people and I have nothing of importance linked to me so I doubt it will be much of a factor. Why am I wanting to rename it? Well, "Ritten By Robyn" was a bad choice mostly because of the spelling. Most intelligent people think it is "Written By Robyn" and the confusion goes on from there. I realize that I can simply rename my blog and keep the URL but I think I will be happier with both being the same.

So...I am giving you fair warning. I will be moving to a new address real soon. If you want to know where I am going, let me know in a comment and I will be sure to notify you when I make the switch.

My New Friends

Meet my new friend Riley Moose! Isn't he cute? I am a moose fan and I especially love him because he he does lots of fun things. He will be featured in our family Christmas cards this year. The card below is inspired by a card on Splitcoast Stampers made by a sweet lady that goes by "Just Because". She told me how she paper pieced Riley's comfy chair so I had to give it a whirl. What a fun technique! I will be doing more of this.

This is his girlfriend Sophie Moose enjoying a bubble bath. I colored both of them with my spankin new Copic markers and used Cinnamon Stickles for their antlers. CTMH Liquid Glass makes her bubbles look real. I stamped "It's a Girl Thing" inside. I think this would make a nice Girlfriend card. Well, I had better get to bed. Two more days of work before I head to the Scrapbooking Factory to work on my Christmas cards. Gosh, I hope they turn out nice.

Snapware Cricut Cartridge Case

I made this carrier for my Cricut carts. I saw a company selling them at SDV this summer and I thought "I can make that!" Well, I did and it was quite a bit cheaper than the ones she was selling. I got the Snapware containers from The Container Store. They sell one large and one small and call it a ribbon organizer or something like that. I bought another set of the small omes 50% off at Hobby Lobby. I have the dimensions of the plastic mesh somewhere. If you are interested, let me know & I will find them and send them to you. The cartridge bin holds 40 carts and the large bin holds 20 books and overlays**. I put my cricut tools in the third bin.
I made one of these for Cheryl as well. I think she likes it!

**I went through my books and tore out all the pages that are not in English. It makes it so much easier when I am thumbing through them.

I'm not sure if I can leave the blogs I love to stalk! What if someone posts something simply awesome (as they ALWAYS do) that I have to try and copy? This may be a tough trip to the mountains for me! Have a blessed weekend and save all the cool stuff till I get back!

God's Grace ~

Today has been such an uplifting day for me, I just had to share this with you. First of all, a friend from work, Todd Reineck, who bravely battled pancreatic cancer and passed last week had a memorial service today and it was simply beautiful. I couldn’t help but smile as I thought of him in heaven with his big grin feeling none of the pain or distress that he carried here on earth. Todd was all about Jesus! I can only hope I’d be able to handle myself as he did as he waited for God to call him to his new home in heaven. What an inspiration he was in that aspect.

I went to Methodist hospital at lunch time to see Jody. He is still in ICU but I am thrilled to say the little stinker is breathing on his own! As sick as he has been, only God could have made this happen. Jody is such a fighter and his blue eyes have more life in them than I have seen in the last 5 weeks. They may be removing the trache as soon as this weekend depending on his progress. Jody may be mentally impaired but he knows Jesus. I continue to remind myself daily that God’s timing is perfect and He will continue to work on me and my family until it is our time to leave this world. His miracles are very evident to me today and I am very grateful. We serve such a loving, kind and amazing God and He does have a plan for all of us...Thank you Father for loving us and knowing what is best for us even when we do not!!

Pardon the Dust

I am attempting to remodel my blog. I am educating myself in HTML code to change my blog to 3 columns. So far, no luck. What a yawner this is. I don't know why Blogger doesn't have a 3 column template to begin with. I find HTML code boring and intimidating. Stick with me and hopefully I will have something pretty to look at soon. I also have a new title coming soon but I have some header work to do.

Some Encouraging News

Tuesday morning at 8:30, Dr. Bell performed a tracheostomy on my brother Jody. After having a tube in his throat for almost a full month he was growing weaker as the days went by. Last Sunday, I spent some quality time with Jody and he cried an awful lot. It was so difficult to stay with him as he tried to call out in pain but couldn't. I sang to him a lot and prayed over him. Then Monday evening I went in to see him and he looked so peaceful it was almost scary. Every other visit I have felt very connected with his big blue eyes and felt like I could sort of read his emotions. Not Monday. He was curling more into a fetal position and was all surrounded by white pillows and his eyes just looked off into space. He would make eye contact with me but I couldn't get a "read" from him. I decided it must be peace he was feeling and thought maybe Jesus was finally going to take him to his heavenly home. The nurse was very rude and made me angry more than once. After I was there for more than an hour, another nurse came in and they started talking about "the procedure" he would have in the morning. I was taken by surprise to learn that my father had signed a consent form to have him trached. I cried all the way home and was fearful this would end up being a bad thing for him.

As afraid as I was yesterday, I gathered enough courage and strength to go see him. I remember my mother being on a ventilator before her death and I wasn't loking forward to seeing my sweet little brother the same way. I was very surprised to see how much better he looked. He was a little more awake than before and tired to talk a couple of times. (that made him very agitated). He was attempting to scratch his forhead but I noticed he had no use of his fingers and was only able to use the back of his hand. He was still curling up in the fetal position while I was there. I left him not knowing what to think. I noted he looked more comfortable but I could not say I thought he looked better.

What a difference 24 hours makes. Mike and I went up at lunch time today and he was much straighter in bed and very alert. I handed him a photo and he was able to grasp it pretty well with his fingers and he was able to nod yes and no. He was so happy to see Mike, he hardly noticed I was there. I hope and pray the doctors are able to get him off the ventilator soon. I don't want him to have to learn how to live with a breathing tube coming out of his throat. Jody loves to talk and it will make him so sad if he can't talk anymore. The doctor said this will be his best shot at getting off the ventilator. So far so good. Thanks be to our Loving God! I know He is in control and has Jody's future all planned out. This boy just may have some more important work to do for God before He calls him home. He is in charge and we are not.

My comfy chair

I got a piece of fleece from Hobby Lobby to throw over a super ugly chair I had in my scrapbook room. I am in love with the chair now! It was a comfy chair before, just ugly. Now it is SUPER comfortable and I love to sit in it and read or watch TV or just veg out. It is even a good napping chair. The pink and brown is a perfect fit for my scrapbook room. I'm such a lucky girl.

Card Therapy Maybe?

Life has been pretty overwhelming lately. My loveable younger brother, Jody has been hospitalized for the past month in very critical condition. Only God knows what His plans are for Jody but I feel like he is so close to going to heaven and I get excited for him. He has endured so much pain in his 44 years but always manages to smile and he is all about love. He has done some important work for God here on earth and I anxiously wait for God to take him home where he will be free from his broken earthly body and rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus. With that going on (and dealing with being sick myself - I'm all better now!) I have not had the time or the desire to even go into my room and be creative. Yesterday was a very emotional day. I cried for hours and after I was finished I wanted a distraction so I went upstairs for about an hour and whipped up a couple of cards for my special co-worker friends. I think they came out rather nice considering I had no plan. I needed the time up there to clear my head and I believe I may do a little more tomorrow!

Let me see, life has been rather busy lately so the only scrapping I have done is in my mind. I started getting a cold last Monday and by Thursday I was coughing my head off. Thursday morning me and 42 of my best sister's in Christ headed up to beautiful Kerrville to set up for the Women's Fall STARS retreat. 37 women arrived that evening and then the fun began! We spent 3 long action packed days getting closer to Christ. What a great experience it was (again)!! I love this ministry so much!

By the time we got home, my sinuses were beginning to hurt and I had an awful kink in my neck. I called the doc yesterday and went to see her. She gave me a good shot of steroids and an antibiotic. I am feeling so much better. I am trying to stay on the "down low" so I can get rid of this.
Unfortunately I haven't been home before 10:00 all week. Some rest will do me good.

I hope to get rested and healthy and do some more scrapping and posting in the next few days. Wish me luck!

Blah Blog

While looking for a new fall background tonight, I decided I need to rename my hum drum Ritten by Robyn. Every time I type it I feel uneasy mispelling a word intentionally. Now, don't get me wrong, I have no issues with the everyday typos for which I am very familiar with. But I like to use proper spelling when at all possible. I have a few ideas for a new title but nothing firm so stay tuned to see what I come up with. I am also open to suggestions.

I will post some handmade goodies this weekend. I have had a blah week and still haven't unpacked from last weekend's crop. Maybe it is my blah blog's fault.

Vintage Birthday Card

I call this my MagicWanda Knock off! :o) Wanda makes these cool vintage cards all the time so I decided to try my hand at one. It is 6x6 and it is mostly made from scraps I had from other projects. I kind of like the little thing! I probably should have put more "stuff" on it but sometimes I get afraid of overdoing it. I have noticed the vintage cards are a little on the gaudy side so I will step "outside the box" a little more next time. Susan liked it and said it was "her". Happy Birthday , Susan!

Graduation Album for Carol

I made this album for Carol, our foreign exchange student from Brazil that lived with us in 2000. She is a beautiful girl as you can see by the pictures. She also has a beautiful heart. It was very difficult for her to be away from her home but she wanted to experience our culture and strengthen her ability to speak English. She always had a smile on her face and kept her chin up on the days she was missing home. I wasn't always as kind to her as I wanted to be. It was a very difficult time in my life. My Mother became ill and died while Carol was here and she was a huge help to Mike and I and the kids. I know it was difficult for her being so far away from home and experiencing my mothers death. I'm sure it made her miss her mother even more. She returned again a couple of years later with both of her parents and a group from church. They were here for the LCMS National Youth gathering and stopped for a few days in SanAntonio. It was neat to have her back for a visit and to meet her mom and dad. Carol turned 27 last month and graduated from law school a year ago. She sent us some photos and I had them printed and put an 8x8 album together for her.

I left the journaling spots blank for her to write what she chooses on them.

I also left some blank pages for her to add her own photos or possibly an invitation or program .

Carol, I know you read my blog....I will be putting this in the mail the first week of October. (I have to take it to show it to a friend.) Act real surprised when it arrives!! I am sorry it took so long but I hope it was worth the wait. I love you and hope to see you again one day soon.

Yesterday was my youngest child's 18th birthday. I truly cannot believe it has been 18 years since we brought our little pink bundle of joy home from the hospital. I remember her big brother, Matthew (4 at the time) was not too impressed with her. He told us he was the baby and he didn't want to keep her. Well, luckily we didn't listen to him and we kept Hayley. We have had good times as well as some not so good times. Through it all, my love has continued to grow for this beautiful gift from God. Happy Birthday, Tink. Your mama loves you and is proud of you.

A few fun memories from Disney - Part III

I had so much fun in Florida it has taken me 3 posts to get it all in and I am sure there is plenty more but this will be it! This post will focus on the 3 fun filled days we spent at The Contemporary Resort for the 11th Annual Sunshine State SDV® at Walt Disney World. This was my first time and I surely hope to return next year. Of course the best part of the whole event was spending time with 3 great Christian women. We had such a good time! Let me see if I can recap a few of my favorite moments. Click on any of the photos to get a better view.

The great shirts Cheryl Made for the four of us. We had one for each day (yellow was MY favorite). They were a huge hit with everyone. We had our picture taken so many times because They were that awesome. Cheryl is the rock star of the Cricut!

Tiaras - Yes, we were scrapbook royalty for 3 days. All four of us had our own unique tiara and we wore them proudly! Mine is sitting safely on a shelf in my scrapbook room. Whenever I need a pick me up I know where to find it. It is magic!

Making new friends. I met so many great ladies from all over and look forward to seeing them again next year. Cheryl's friends from Florida are all so sweet (and beautiful)! It was also great to get new ideas from them as well.

Having a gift at my table each day from Cheryl, Wren & Jackie. We had a great time exchanging little gifts that we brought with us. I have some treasures that I will cherish always. I had such a fun time leaving gifts for them as well.

My scrapbook suitcase weighed in at 49.6 lbs when I checked it in at the S.A. Airport and the limit is 50 lbs. I held my breath after packing to come home and it weighed in at 50 lbs! It was crazy how many HEAVY bags we had. Thankfully 2 bags (50 lbs or under) fly free on Southwest Airlines.

Jackie's "SPOOKY" wordbook boo-boo. She made the cutest little books for her kids and I let her use my Bind-it-All to put it together. I asked Cheryl to help her since she has more experience with them than I do. Something went wrong and Cheryl put the "s" on and very carefully punched it. The darn thing punched crooked and Jackie was so sweet about it ruining her "s". We laughed so hard trying to correct the
mistake. Cheryl was in tears and Jackie had to cross her legs (again). Luckily she was able to fix it and it turned out wonderfully. I told her "s" stood for SH--! I don't think I got a picture of her albums, they were soo stinkin cute!

Birthday Card

I made this little card today with some scraps I have been hanging on to. I love the colors and I know just the girl to give it to! I stickled the dickens out of it and thought of Jackie the whole time. Jackie: "Did I tell you I just LOVE stickles?" For the record Jackie, yes you did. Many times!! Thanks for the Cinnamon, it's a new favorite. I love them too. I think it's prettier in person. I just signed up for a digital photigraphy class - hopefully my photography skills will get better after I learn a thing or two. Don't give up on me!

Mike made the mistake of falling asleep after dinner at his Grandma's house and the kids played a little joke on him. Yes! he is really sleeping... haha! We have loved and laughed over this photo so much, I decided to make a layout with it. The paper reminded me of Grandma's drapes and it was real nice of barbie to wear a bathing suit that coordinated with the drapes and paper.

HATS!

Me losing my sunglasses & phone at 2 separate locations within 45 minutes. It was the beginning of a very forgetful time for me. I lost several other items but am happy to thankfully say, I got all of them back. This is not a FUN memory but it is memorable. It was very embarrassing and they said they are going to Velcro things to me next time. :(

Jackie's somewhat odd but very adorable infatuation with Donald Duck.

He obviously shares her feelings - I think he is proposing in the above photo! You should hear her giggle when he comes around. It is priceless. I think I might be jealous of their special thing.

Aerosmith's Rockin Roller Coaster

Another not so fun memory for me but it is worth mentioning since Cheryl & Jackie got a real kick out of my reaction to the awful ride. I just noticed in the photo that it is sponsored by Hanes. I find that very appropriate since I needed a clean pair of underwear after the ride. I was so out of sorts afterwards that I took a 3 hour nap and still woke up with a headache. I will try most rides at least once. I know I won't be going back for more next time. AWFULLLLL!! I will admit that the tea cups make me green as well.

Disney Pillowcase

Yes, I said pillowcase....I made these super cute and very easy pillowcases with the help of the Tucson Quilter's Guild and my good friend Darlene. It is called Easy Schmeezy Pillowcase and it is just that. Try one for yourself and you will see how easy and fun they are to make. I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination and these little babies made me look good! The Mickey theme was a hit. We all had matching pillows at The Contemporary as well as Beach Club Villas. Mine now sits on the overstuffed chair in my scrapbook room - just in case I need a nap between projects. Aren't they cute? I love the white on white polka dot fabric. I will be making more for sure.

I got these out of the dollar bin at Michaels. They were for a little boy's room. I covered them with paper and flowers. I printed the text on my computer and cut them out with my new Spellbinder Nestabilities - I like them & look forward to making some more goodies with them! I tied a bow on top and had a cute little gift when I was done.

Toilet Paper Roll Mini Album - Disney Style

These are fun fun fun to make (and simple too)! I made these little mini albums to give to my Disney girls at our Scrapper's Dream Vacation at Disney last week. I took 3 empty toilet paper rolls and flattened them. I ran my bone folder back and forth over the edges to try and flatten a little more.
Next I covered them with paper and embellished with lots of Disney goodies and paper. This is also a good time to set them under a stack of books for a few hours to flatten them some more.

I made the tags with my cricut Mickey Font cartridge and design studio. As an after thought, I embossed one with my cuttlebug. These tags are good for adding photos or journaling.

I bound it with the Bind-It-All and added ribbon. All done!

I am happy with the finished product and I think they liked them! I am looking forward to seeing them after our great photos are added.

Purple is her color so I'm Wearing Purple is the name of her blog. Isn't that cleaver??

4. Sandy....is Saved By Grace. Maybe that is why she is always so bubbly and positive about life. She is on fire for the Lord and is such an inspiration to me. Her husband Mike is equally as neat but don't tell him I said so or he will remind me of it for months. I love both of them but again, don't tell Mike.

5. Jane.... is a new friend but one I felt an instant bond with. She is the sweetest girl -I went to a crop at her home studio a while back and look forward to returning as soon as I can. I had such a fun time and laughed so much. It was the first time I had been to a crop and she really made me feel at home. She has an internet store called The Scrapbooking Factory and her blog is called The Scrapbooking Factory as well. p.s. She just got some great new product in! Stop by & say "hi"!

I'm still alive...

All is well in the Neel house. Mike is still driving trucks and being an awesomely wonderful husband. Matthew is busy saving lives in Medina County and loving it. Hayley is on her last week of summer break. She will go back to ACE and should be finished in a couple of months! Go Hayley! I have been hard at work making goodies to take to Disney & share with my room mates. I have made some really cute things but the trouble is, I can't post them! They are surprises for the girls! Not all of it is paper crafts. I got the old sewing machine out tonight and am mighty pleased with what I came up with. I will keep photos and post my creations when it is safe. 29 days and counting for Disney! I'm sure I will have a little something to post in a few days, just can't imagine what at this point! Maybe I should post a picture of my new Ottlight I got at JoAnn Fabric this weekend (50% off!) Woohoo! I'm a wild girl.

Saturday and Sunday I spent many hours scrapbooking with some of the nicest ladies! I had never been to a crop before and Cheryl wanted me to get my feet wet before we go to Florida next month to scrapbook with 500 of her closest friends. I was so nervous but it took me about 3o seconds to feel at home. The crop was at her friend Jane's home studio. Jane has the greatest set up as well as an awesome internet store named The Scrapbooking Factory. All her product is top notch and I bought plenty while I was there. The ladies kept referring to me as the "newbie". I was in awe of all the beautiful stuff they were creating. I didn't get much accomplished the first day because I just stared at all the great stuff around me. Sunday morning, my creative juices started flowing and I made a few things. I will be more prepared next time....Gosh it was a fun weekend!!!!

I love ribbon and thought I had a lot of it but take a look at this!!! Her collection wasn't even the biggest! They all brought their supplies in these sophisticated carriers. I was like a kid in a candy shop!

I absolutely LOVE this photo of Cheryl. Look closely and you will see she is wearing 2 pair of glasses! She said she doesn't do bifocals well and this works for her. The only problem is, she sometimes forgets she has them on and gets some odd looks from strangers! I would never look at you odd Cheryl, I'll just put your picture on the internet!

Everyone was hard at work making magic with paper.

I have a thing for flowers and Jane has every flower a girl could want. I want to put them all in a big bin & jump in! Take a look at the size of these babies!

A couple of simple cards I made. Top one is a general card and the bottom is a card for Mike's birthday.

This is my latest mini album. I made from toilet paper rolls. I saw it on the blog PawsN2Stamp. She has a little tutorial in case you are interested. It was super easy and a ton of fun!

I titled it "Life is Good" and put some random family pictures in it. I will make some more of these cuties.

I never thought I could have so much fun scrapbooking with other people. My reply when asked who I scrap with was always "Me, Myself and I". I think those days are over..... :-)

A long Time Coming

My close friends know of something that has hurt in my heart for a long time. Due to a lot of dysfunctional family behaviors, hurt feeling and somethings I simply can't explain, I haven't seen my father or siblings for a very long time.

We were all thrown together in 2000 when my mother became ill and subsequently passed away. The situation was an awful one for all of us, we had carried so much anger and hurt around for many years and this crisis multiplied those feelings tremendously. Once my mother finally passed on to rest peacefully in her Heavenly Father's arms, we continued with our hurtful words and actions toward each other. We were more divided than ever before. My reaction was to basically walk away from my remaining family as a protection mechanism for myself & my children. I realize there is no perfect family or relationship out there but my biggest fear had always been that my children would experience the same hurt & anger I dealt with as a child. My father, mother, sisters & oldest brother and I all had a part in the mess we were in but from my perspective, I seemed to be the only one that carried so much baggage from our dysfunctional family life. I was a mess to say the least. Turning away was the best answer I had at the time. I took no pleasure in it but I was able to spend some valuable healing time in counseling, prayer and thought. I have forgiven those that have hurt me and asked for forgivness from those that I may have hurt.

There is one innocent bystander in this mess. It is my sweet, little brother, Jody. He was born premature and mentally handicapped. He has dealt with pain and illness his whole life. He loves everyone with a pure heart and is loyal to the bone. I had told Jody I would be there for him but I gave into unrealistic fears and made pointless excuses and stayed away. I thought about him every day and felt a deeper and deeper guilt building up inside. The longer I stayed away, the harder it was to go back.

I woke up sick on Father's Day morning and had one of my frequent urges to call my dad. I immediately picked up the phone and called before I lost my nerve. The call did not go well but I didn't expect it to. I know I deserve some of the anger I got from him and I told him so. I also told him that I loved him and Happy Father's Day. I only heard silence on the other end. After I hung up I cried for a while and then decided to get my act together and go see Jody at the State School where he has lived for 25 years. I made it over there the next morning after getting lost a few times. I was very afraid but once I made it in I found Jody sitting in his wheelchair by the office shredding paper. (that is his official "job") I'm not sure if he recognized me right off but after I told him who I was he seemed to know me. I rolled him down the hall and we had a great visit. My dad came in a little later and we made a little small talk. I was shocked to see how old & frail he was. He told me he just finished up a chemo round for lung cancer and was starting another in the following week. I continued to visit with Jody for about an hour and promised him I would return soon. This time I intend to keep my promise. So much relief has come from my visit with Jody and I am looking forward to our next visit.

Recipe Box

I made this for my son Matthew for Christmas but actually just finished it. I know it's June but don't be too hard on me. He actually ended up moving back home for a while so he hasn't needed it recently. Hayley has requested one too. I liked this project!

He is always asking me how to make this or that and I realized most of my recipes are in my head and not on paper. I really had to think hard on how to make a recipe box for a guy. I wanted to make it fun and not too feminine. I also wanted it to be something that he could share with his wife someday. - I loved this paper!!!!The background looks like recipes and clippings you would find in your grandma's kitchen. There are even a few food stains thrown in for fun. I sanded & painted the $3.00 box inside and out and then added the paper to the ends, "recipes" to the front and mod podged the whole thing. I wanted it to wipe clean easily in case it gets dirty. The mod podge achieved that. I bought some chipboard dividers and had to trim them just a little and covered them with different colored papers and used my label maker for the tabs.

I used lined large index cards for the recipe cards and ran them all through my printer to personalize them a little. I added several favorite recipes and had his aunt add some as well. I think it's important to have them in our own handwriting to make them a little more special. I have one recipe that my mother hand wrote for me years ago and I have it preserved in a zip lock bag because it is beginning to deteriorate. I have a special feeling when I see it in her own hand writing. I need to give some blank cards to his great aunts so they can do the same. I printed plenty of blank cards so he can add to it as needed.

Happy Father's Day!

I made this card very quickly today. I saw a photo on a great blog I stumbled on. The name escapes me right now but I will find it so I can give her credit. I used my Cricut Camp Out cartridge and colored the artwork with ink and craft sponges. I am very happy with it and will say that the picture doesn't do it much justice. Trust me, its great! I cut the fish twice and the top one is pop dotted to give it dimension. It doesn't look like they line up well but that is just the angle of my photo. I used twine for the line & he even has a hook in his mouth! I posted it already because we celebrated today and I already gave it to Mike. He really liked it! he kept calling it his 3-D card!

We went to Texas Pride BBQ. He has wanted to go since he saw it on Diners Drive Ins & Dives. It was just ok but we had a good time. Happy Father's Day Honey, the kids and I are blessed to have such a wonderful husband and father. we love you!

Night in Downtown San Antonio

Last Wednesday night Matthew talked Hayley & I into a trip downtown to see the newly opened extension of the riverwalk. I believe it was 102 degrees that day so I wasn't too eager. But since Mike was sleeping and going to work in a few hours I agreed. We started out by having dinner at Josephine St. Cafe. If you haven't ever had a meal there, you should. It is nothing fancy but they have excellent steaks. There is always a coupon in the Entertainment Book so it is a reasonable meal. Then we drove next door to the old Pearl Brewery and parked there. They are renovating that area so nicely and it makes me happy to see some of the buildings I remember from childhood getting new life. We parked there and walked right down the stairs to the riverwalk. Now, for those of you that are from San Antonio, don't think it is anything like our famous stretch of river with restaurants & shops. It is so pure and clean, I love it. People were riding bikes, walking dogs and sitting on benches enjoying the beautiful night. It was amazing how cool & breezy it was! The kids did give me a hard time because they said I had to say "hello" to every person that passed us. I have no idea why they have a problem with that, I have always been that way and see no reason to change at this point in life. It was a fun evening. We got home just in enough time for me to pour Mike some coffee & kiss him goodnight. I want to take him next time.

Lots of neat artsy type features line the banks. This is the top of a waterfall/cave feature. I took the kid's picture (above) inside it but it was too dark to pick it up well.

These sunfish lights are under the IH35 bridge. You need to see them in person to appreciate the art. They sway in the wind and are like nothing else I have seen in our Fiesta oriented city. This is also the location that the Mexican Free Tail Bats fly out of at 8:45 pm. We missed that but I wasn't sad. If you've seen one bat you've seen them all.

We will be taking this in again soon. From what I understand it will eventually extend further north to the zoo. The Pearl Brewery has recently started having a Farmers Market on Saturdays and several friends have said it is worth a visit. Condos and office space are in the works.

Good job San Antonio. I am happy to see a pet & family friendly environment where people can take a peaceful walk and not worry about the congestion and chaos that has taken place in our city. We do hope you have restrooms planned for the new future down there though!

A couple of cards

First card is my version of a card featured on the Cricit Chirp. It is similar to the one posted but has my own touch.

The second is a little out of season but I just came across the picture of my first attempt at making my own Christmas cards. I think I made about 40 before running out of steam.
This is also the card that got me hooked on card making.

I hope to get back to blogging real soon. Life has been busy lately. I was supposed to go to Cheryl's tonight but decided I need to stay home with Hayley tonight - she isn't feeling well. I plan on cleaning my scrapbook room this weekend and that's about it.

Saturday we met at Tomatillo's to surprise Mike's Auntie Jean for her 9oth birthday. I personally don't think it's a great idea to surprise someone who is 90 years old but Jeannie handled it all just fine. She shed a few tears but quickly joined us for a fun afternoon with family we just don't get to see enough of. She even had 2 margaritas!

Ballerinas and Bears

I really like how this page came out. I saw the cute little bear months ago while blog stalking (as I like to call it). I fell in love with her but didn't save the location. Rachel sent these great pictures she took of her 2 little ballerinas, Savannah & little sister Adelyn. I knew the little bear belonged with these pictures. I searched forever before finding the cutie again. It is from Jill's Paper Jems, she creates paper piecing patterns. I got the pdf from her and the rest is history. I just loved cutting out the little girl and making her cute outfit. (drawing her eyes was a scary event) You will be seeing more of her, I am sure -dressed differently of course! I framed it and gave it to TJ to deliver for me. Rachel called today to tell me she really likes it. Whew!

I spent the evening with a little friend that I haven't seen since she was a little baby. The Kee's were our favorite across the street neighbors for a few short years but moved to Houston when Kellie was a baby & her brother Robbie wasn't even in school yet. Then they moved even further away to Naperville, Illinois. I have missed seeing the kids grow and have missed their parents, Lea & Jim as well. Shortly after Christmas I was happy to hear Jim's work brought him back to San Antonio. I know Naperville had become home for them but they were happy to be close to family again. Lea told me Kellie, now a 2nd grader is quite artistic & would enjoy spending some time with me making something. They came over tonight and after we visited for a while we sent Lea off to HEB so Kellie & I could collaborate on what to make with the great pictures she brought with her. This design was all Kellie & very fitting to her personality. Bright & sparkley!

We had a great time! We decided to make a mini album with some cardboard coasters I picked up (with permission) at Chili's last week. Since it was our first we made a few mistakes but were pretty pleased with the overall outcome. First off, either punch the holes on the side or flip the pictures before punching the holes so the Kee's aren't standing on their head.

We decided we are so good together that we are going into the mini scrapbook business. She has already picked her title. Director of Sparkles. She is my kind of girl, she loves sparkles!
